Research Interests
Dr. Drendel is a physician scientist committed to patient-oriented translational research. As a pediatric emergency medicine physician, her main research interest is the optimization of pain treatment for children. She was the principal investigator for one of the largest published pediatric clinical trial of at-home analgesic effectiveness for children with fractures and she has an in-depth understanding of the at-home pain experience. Dr. Drendel is currently the principal investigator for a prospective multi-center longitudinal comparative effectiveness study that aims to determine the most effective analgesic regimen for children with fracture pain and is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Drendel has been a co-investigator on 5 previous grants evaluating pediatric pain treatment effectiveness and has developed collaborative networks that position the team to perform large-scale innovative research. Prior research evaluated the variability in the treatment of pediatric pain; current goals include developing a comprehensive understanding of the pain experience for children from the Emergency Department to the at-home setting.
Primary research focus:
- Outpatient pediatric pain experience
- Treatment of pediatric acute pain in the Emergency Department
- Pain assessment
- Procedural pain
