Biography

Dr. Shakir was born in Michigan and grew up in Ohio. He was valedictorian of his high school class and was accepted into the Guarantee Admission Program at the University of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine where he received the University’s Chancellor’s Scholarship for his undergraduate studies. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. A graduate of the Physician-Scientist Training Program while at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Shakir performed bone biology research focusing on tissue engineering applications for the craniofacial skeleton. He furthered his interest in treating patients with craniofacial challenges while in plastic surgery residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania & Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and pediatric and adult craniomaxillofacial surgery fellowship training at the University of Washington & Seattle Children's Hospital, recognized as internationally renowned craniofacial centers. He participates in clinical outcomes research related to cleft and craniofacial surgery with the goal to enhance the standard of care provided to all patients. He regularly presents this research at national and international conferences and contributes to the scientific literature in a variety of peer-reviewed journals. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, tennis, and Big10 sports.
