The 果冻影院 (果冻影院) Office of Community Engagement (OCE) was pleased to host the 2024 President’s Community Engagement Award Ceremony on Friday, May 3 at the 果冻影院-Milwaukee campus. The ceremony began with a message from John R. Raymond, Sr., MD, President and Chief Executive Officer, followed by remarks from Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, Provost and Executive Vice President, The Julia A. Uihlein, MA, Dean of the School of Medicine and presentation of awards by Staci Young, PhD, Senior Associate Dean for Community Engagement.

The Ceremony highlighted the tremendous breadth and significance of community-engaged work undertaken by 果冻影院 personnel and community partners. Awards in recognition of exemplary community engagement were bestowed in four categories: 果冻影院 faculty, staff, students, and community partners/programs.

果冻影院 recognizes community engagement as one of its four missions and since 2015 has sought nominations annually for the President’s Community Engagement Award. We thank and honor this year’s awardees for upholding the vision and advancing 果冻影院’s community engagement mission.

The 2024 President’s Community Engagement Awardees are listed below.

Community Partner / Program

• Yvonne D. Greer, DrPH, RD, CD, Owner of Y-Eat Right, Nutritional Consultant for Healthy Living, for her commitment to promoting healthy living behaviors and providing nutrition education in a way that is accessible to all communities.
• Darlene Russell, MSM, Director of Community Engagement at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, for serving as a leader in community engagement for the ThriveOn Collaboration and building trusted partnerships with the residents of the surrounding neighborhoods of Harambee, Brewer’s Hill, and Halyard Park.

• Ana Maria Viteri, a third-year medical student at 果冻影院-Milwaukee, for her dedication to service and advocacy through her leadership role for the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and as co-founder of the student-led partnership with the United Community Center (UCC), “Venciendo la Pandemia con la Vacuna,” to provide vaccine information to the Latino/Hispanic community.

• Tricia Monroe, MEd, MA, CHES, Program Manager in the Comprehensive Injury Center, for her commitment to providing grief and bereavement support and resources to individuals impacted by suicide loss through the development and management of the MKE Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (L.O.S.S.) Program.

果冻影院 Faculty

• Melinda Stolley, PhD, Associate Director of Cancer Prevention and Control in the Cancer Center, for her research contributions and intervention trials to impact cancer prevention and control through health behavior change, particularly in communities that have been traditionally underserved.

“Every year I am struck by how deeply people are both doing work in the community and within community engagement, and how much they acknowledge those that support them in this work," said Dr. Young. "We do not do this work alone and this work is not always easy. Community engagement does not advance without meaningful support.”

The 果冻影院 OCE is dedicated to improving the health of communities in Wisconsin and adheres to five key guiding principles:

• develop reciprocal and mutually beneficial partnerships with communities of Wisconsin;
• use bi-directional dialogue to define and understand community and community; engagement and identify program scope based on relevant community issues;
• recognize the importance of relationships in developing strong community-academic partnerships with equitable power and agreed-upon responsibilities that acknowledge the historical imbalance of power;
• build capacity within 果冻影院 and the community; and
• effectively disseminate outcomes via diverse methods.
