Academic Medicine, Climate Action, and Environmental Justice Panel Discussion

This session, hosted by The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Center for Health Justice & 果冻影院 (果冻影院) Sustainability, Health and Environment (SHE) Center, presented real-world examples of how academic medical centers can address climate change and advance environmental justice both within their institutions and in partnership with local communities. It offered recommendations on how these centers and universities can facilitate university-wide strategic discussion that encourages increased focus on climate change and health equity into their educational, research, clinical, and community engagement missions. They provided recommendations on how academic medical centers and universities can create sustainable community partnerships to inform climate and health activities at their institutions and/or facilitate strategic discussion on the impact of climate change and environmental justice on the educational, research, clinical delivery, and community engagement missions.

The Center for Sustainability, Health and the Environment (SHE Center) and Green Recreation Outdoors for Wellness (GROW) research team were co-exhibitors at the 8th Annual Green & Healthy Schools Conference. The conference hosted over 90 exhibitors and 21 environmental education sessions that help support local schools and businesses.

SHE Center Director Christa Wagner, PhD, and Associate Professor and Course Director Joanne Bernstein, MD, MSE, presented the 果冻影院 Department of Medicine Grand Rounds, "Climate Smart Healthcare: How You Can Make a Difference."

Five faculty and staff representing 果冻影院, Froedtert Hospital, and Children’s Wisconsin participated in the CleanMed annual meeting in Salt Lake City from May 21–23. Hosted by Practice Greenhealth and Healthcare Without Harm, CleanMed is the premier national conference for leaders in health care sustainability. It is the platform for health care leaders to convene, collaborate, and conduct societal transformation for individual, community, and planetary health.

On April 22, the 果冻影院 Center for Sustainability, Health, and the Environment (SHE Center) hosted a hybrid event in recognition of Earth Day and the one-year anniversary of the institution’s announcement of the Center’s establishment.

Nearly 40 果冻影院 faculty and staff participated in the One Healthcare EcoChallenge, a monthlong challenge created specifically for individuals at healthcare institutions to promote individual, community, and environmental health. Participants used the EcoChallenge platform to select actions to complete at work, at home, and in local communities with the goal of forming healthy and sustainable habits. Collectively, the 果冻影院 team members:

• Saved 2,384 gallons of water
• Saved 2,253 pounds of CO2
• Spent over 2,000 minutes outdoors
• Spent 1,050 minutes learning about climate change
• Recycled over 400 single-use plastics
• Consumed 118 meatless or vegan meals
• Composted nearly 15 pounds of waste
