The fellowship aims to provide subspecialty training in the full breadth of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, including microvascular reconstruction, through a variety of clinical settings and experiences. It is expected that the fellow will assist in patient evaluation and surgical and aesthetic patient management, increasing autonomy throughout the course of the year as appropriate. The fellow will have core otolaryngology privileges at all associated institutions and their clinics and surgical centers.

The fellow will prepare and present two one-hour educational sessions as part of a monthly facial plastic and reconstructive session with the otolaryngology residents and will assist with hands-on skill labs for residents and medical students. At the VA Medical Center, the fellow will provide direct supervision of otolaryngology residents in the clinic and staff facial plastic surgery procedures in the operating room. In addition, the fellow will be involved in patient safety and quality initiatives through programs such as morbidity and mortality conferences or other project-based opportunities

The fellow will cover attending level general adult ENT call in the community call pool approximately every 4th night. Additionally, the fellow will cover attending-level facial trauma call at the main campus for 3 weeks during the academic year. The fellow may be asked to assist with facial trauma case needs at Children鈥檚 Wisconsin at times but will not be responsible for call coverage.

The fellow has dedicated research time and is expected to participate in clinical research projects. He/she will author a minimum of one peer-reviewed publication and attend at least one national education meeting during their fellowship year.

FORME Aesthetic and Vein Center is the primary multidisciplinary outpatient facial plastic surgery clinic location for Drs. Pawar and Rhee, where both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery patients are seen for consultations and post-operative visits

Froedtert Hospital
Facial trauma: Froedtert Hospital is southeastern Wisconsin’s only Level I trauma center and the Otolaryngology department shares facial trauma call coverage on a weekly rotation with plastic surgery and oral surgery. The fellow will help taking primary facial trauma call in addition to assisting the director, co-director, and other faculty members as needed with facial trauma cases.
Microvascular reconstruction: The fellow will assist Dr. Joseph Zenga in microvascular cases including flap harvest, anastomosis, and inset. Approximately 80-100 head and neck reconstructive cases are performed annually, and the fellow can expect to participate in 30-50 cases, with the possibility of more depending on interest and goals. The fellow should expect to become facile in microvascular anastomosis, including hand-sewn and coupler anastomoses. By the time of graduation, the fellow should be well-versed in harvest and inset of radial forearm and perforator-based anterolateral thigh free flaps. There will be opportunity for additional experience in vascularized bone reconstruction including fibula and subscapular system flaps. In addition to free tissue, the fellow will be exposed to regional flap reconstruction of the head and neck including pectoralis, supraclavicular, submental island flaps.
Mohs reconstruction cases weekly with Drs. Pawar and Rhee at the outpatient Skin Cancer Center in collaboration with our two Mohs surgeons in Dermatology. 飩� Multidisciplinary cases with other otolaryngology faculty, oculoplastic surgery, and OMFS as needed.

Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital
Primary OR for Dr. Pawar’s cases including rhinoplasty, aging face surgery, skin cancer reconstruction, facial reanimation, etc.

Froedtert Surgery Center
Primary ambulatory surgery center for Drs. Rhee and Pawar for rhinoplasty and other outpatient facial plastic surgery procedures.

The fellow will gain exposure to facial plastic surgery procedures in the pediatric population including pediatric nasal surgery, facial trauma (as needed), microtia reconstruction, and vascular anomalies.

The fellow will function in an attending level role at the VA hospital and will be responsible for staffing a facial plastic surgery clinic along with cases once per week. This will be an opportunity for the fellow to gain autonomy and graduated responsibility in managing facial plastic surgery patients. Cases typically include functional rhinoplasty, skin cancer reconstruction, blepharoplasty and brow lifts, and other reconstructive procedures as needed.
