Ross Collery, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, was awarded a five-year, $1.93 million R01 grant from the National Eye Institute to investigate the role of STRA6 in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of the eye using zebrafish as a model organism.

AOIP researchers featured on the cover of the McPherson Eye Research Institute InSights Newsletter - Spring 2019
The newsletter story highlights the collaborative work associated with the recent NEI U24 grant awarded to Joe Carrol, PhD, and Jacque Duncan, MD, of UCSF.
The research team will develop, characterize and disseminate two promising animal model systems that are closer to human visual anatomy and function than current mouse and rat models: the 13-lined ground squirrel and the tree shrew, both cone-dominant animals.
AOIP alum, , recently joined the McPherson Eye Research Institute as a Morgridge Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellow.

Dr. Patterson's poster, “Differences in axial eye length and retinal structure between patients with achromatopsia and blue cone monochromacy,” won the contest in the Visual Psychophysics/Physiological Optics category. This was Dr. Patterson's third nomination and first win. Congratulations!

The National Eye Institute’s Audacious Goal Initiative for Regenerative Medicine has awarded Joseph Carroll, PhD, a grant to develop new research models to advance treatments for blinding conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and other degenerative eye diseases.

Emily Patterson, PhD (postdoctoral fellow), and Rebecca Mastey, will present their posters during the on May 1st at the annual meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Patterson’s poster compares metrics for quantifying the human rod photoreceptor mosaic. Ms. Mastey’s poster characterizes the retinal structure in ATF6-associated achromatopsia.

Dr. Carroll has been selected to receive a 2018 ARVO Foundation/Pfizer Ophthalmics Carl Camras Translational Research Award. This prestigious award, established in 2010 and supported by Pfizer Ophthalmics through the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research, recognizes up to three young investigators annually who are working in areas of translational research and have exhibited excellence in research and their fundamental scientific discoveries, concepts and novel technologies.

Dennis P. Han, MD, Jack A. and Elaine D. Klieger Professor of Ophthalmology, has earned the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Life Achievement Honor Award for his career-long commitment to “advancing the profession and positively impacting patients’ eye health,” according to the AAO.

Ben Sajdak receives poster award at ӰԺ Graduate Student Symposium
On Tuesday, May 16, 2017 the Graduate Student Association (GSA) hosted its first Graduate Student Symposium at the Harley-Davidson Museum. The symposium drew more than 115 current ӰԺ graduate students.

Melissa Wilk, PhD, receives dissertation award at ӰԺ graduation
At the 2017 ӰԺ Commencement Ceremony, AOIP alum Melissa Wilk, PhD, received the Friends of ӰԺ Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation Award for her dissertation, "Using Imaging and Genetics to Characterize Visual System Structure Across the Pigmentation Spectrum."
Funded by NIH and Vision for Tomorrow, Dr. Wilk's work led to multiple publications and conference appearances during her time with the AOIP. Currently, Dr. Wilk is a postdoctoral researcher at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.

Dr. Patterson’s poster describes the genotype, clinical phenotype and cone structure in subjects with a clinical diagnosis of blue cone monochromacy (BCM) and mutations in the OPN1LW /OPN1MW gene array. Ms. Woertz’s poster examines the relationship between cone density (CD) and Vernier acuity (VA) in human albinism.

ӰԺ researchers lead imaging study of patients with genetic color vision disorder in advance of AGTC gene therapy clinical trials
The initial results of the imaging study, which appear in the , show that high-resolution adaptive optics imaging could help physicians determine the potential effectiveness of these new gene therapies on various patients.

Members of the ophthalmology departments from ӰԺ and UW-Madison were treated to presentations by department fellows and two poster sessions highlighting the work of PhD students, postdocs and staff from both institutions. The research covered topics in visual acuity, retina disease, glaucoma, eyelid trauma, color vision, cataract surgery and ocular imaging.

Eye Institute representatives including many AOIP members combined to form the largest group participating in the annual FFB VisionWalk on Milwaukee's Lakefront. Kimberly Stepien, MD, VisionWalk medical chair, and her family participated in the 3.2 mile walk which raises funds for vision research.

ӰԺ researchers find “color-correcting glasses” don’t live up to the hype
Summer research student Rebecca Mastey, under the direction of Emily Patterson, PhD, tested genetically confirmed red-green CVD men and gave them the Color Assessment and Diagnosis test with and without the color-correcting glasses. The results were presented in a poster May 1, 2016, at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in Seattle.

Grant award aims to help improve vision health for Wisconsin’s children
Deborah Costakos, MD, MS, and community partner Prevent Blindness Wisconsin are recipients of an ӰԺ Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment award. The partners will develop and conduct vision screenings in multiple settings, including nine Milwaukee Public Schools. They aim to increase awareness of eye health and thus improve children’s vision health access and outcomes in the long-term.
Joseph Carroll, PhD, appointed to advisory board for Ireland's Fighting Blindness
is an Irish, patient-led organization that funds research for the treatment and cure of vision loss. The Medical and Scientific Advisory Board (MSAB) advises the directors of Fighting Blindness by appraising new grant applications and monitoring programs for the organization. Dr. Carroll and the other board members will offer recommendations regarding research policies and strategic plans.

AOIP paper receives 2015 Garland W. Clay Award
The paper “Adaptive Optics Retinal Imaging: Emerging Clinical Applications,” was awarded the 2 by the American Academy of Optometry. This award is presented to the author or authors of the manuscript published in Optometry and Vision Science that has been most widely cited in the world of scientific literature in the preceding five years. Authors of this paper were former AOIP members: Pooja Godara and Adam M. Dubis, AOIP collaborators: Austin Roorda, and Jacque L. Duncan, and AOIP co-director: Joseph Carroll.

Ben's undergraduate education and research conducted at UW-Oshkosh focused his interest in vision research. Pursuing his PhD in the Neuroscience Doctoral Program within the AOIP, Ben applies his biology background towards the search for biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases such as glaucoma and Alzheimer’s disease. He is also at the forefront of expanding the use of adaptive optics at ӰԺ to study retinal metabolic changes during hibernation.

Vision research benefits from adaptive optics imaging with new technique

Jonathon Young receives a Summer Student Fellowship from Fight For Sight
Adaptive optics ophthalmoscopy provides a safe, non-invasive way to take images of individual capillaries and blood vessels in the human eye. Jon's project aims to enhance the quality of these images by optimizing the split-detection geometry, which will improve our ability to detect vascular pathology. This will provide new opportunities to diagnose and treat diabetic retinopathy sooner, and more effectively follow a patient's response to treatment.

Funding from the Marrus Family Foundation allowed the AOIP to develop an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope capable of fluorescence angiography in the lab of Dr. Richard Rosen.
