ӰԺ Cardiothoracic Imaging Scanlon Fellowship Program

The Cardiothoracic Fellowship was established in 1983 in memory of Dr. Gerard Scanlon, an outstanding chest radiologist and teacher. The one-year fellowship offers training in all aspects of Cardiothoracic Imaging. Board certified fellows may obtain instructor status.

Staffing

We are staffed with three full-time cardiothoracic radiologists: Dr. Christopher Bennett, Dr. Cary Squires, and Dr. Luis Antonio Sosa Lozano.

Clinical Experience

Chest
The fellow spends the majority of his/her time in diagnostic thoracic imaging. An increasing amount of time is spent in cardiac imaging. All thoracic needle biopsies are performed by the Cardiothoracic Imaging Section. Pulmonary imaging experience includes interpretation of chest radiographs, CT, and MRI. The fellow, whether designated as a fellow or an instructor, assumes graded responsibility over the course of the year. A new lung cancer screening program is in place in cooperation with the department of pulmonary medicine, the department of preventive cardiology, and the smoking cessation clinic. Unique programs in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT Center of Excellence) and an adult cystic fibrosis program enrich the experience.

Cardiac
The cardiac MRI program is closely integrated with cardiology. The program offers hands on advanced training in performing and interpreting cardiac MRs. Fellows gain extensive experience and knowledge throughout the year in basic and advanced applications of CMR in viability, cardiomyopathies, cardiac masses, pre- and post- ablation CMR, and Stress MRI. Joint radiology-cardiology conferences include a weekly case review conference, a monthly joint adult and pediatric CMR conference and a monthly research CMR meeting. Cardiac MRs are performed on 1. 5T and 3T Siemens scanner. The images are post processed and interpreted on dedicated CVI42 software.

In the cardiac CT program, fellows learn advanced cardiac CTA techniques including protocolling, coronary artery tracking and CTA interpretation. The fellow will be eligible for ACR Cardiac CT certification exam at the end of the year. There is also a large adult congenital heart disease program at ӰԺ. Cardiac CT and Coronary CTAs are performed on the latest state-of-art 256-slice “Revolution” GE scanners and advanced GE work stations.

Froedtert Hospital is a general tertiary and primary care hospital, with a Level 1 Trauma Center. It serves as a primary source for the local community (both suburban and inner city), as well as a tertiary referral hospital for southeast Wisconsin. There is a growing Cancer Center, a large Pulmonary and Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, multiple transplant services, and a full-time pulmonary pathologist.

Teaching Opportunities
The fellow is expected to take part in teaching at all levels. At all times, there are two or three medical students and two residents on the service. Teaching includes daily workstation sessions and formal lectures to both students and residents. The fellow also prepares and presents at numerous interdepartmental conferences (Pulmonary Medicine Conference; Thoracic Tumor Board; Cardiology/Radiology Conference; and Interstitial Lung Disease Conference).

Research Opportunities
Unassigned time provides the opportunity for research and lecture preparation. Fellows are encouraged to join the faculty in ongoing research or establish their own projects. Much of our research revolves around the application of new high-end technology to clinical problems. Fellows are also taught and encouraged to publish their results. Start-up money is available for research projects and statistical help is provided by the Medical College.
Work Environment
The department was designated a “Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence” by the American College of Radiology. This was the first such award in the Midwest and one of eight initial awards. The hospital is located on a large grassy campus in a suburb of Milwaukee. Froedtert has been voted one of the best places to work in Wisconsin, year-in and year-out. Our department is a friendly, stable department, with little turnover at both the professional and staff level.
