Research Interests

The Klug lab is investigating the conformational dynamics of seven distinct bacterial proteins that facilitate the transport of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from the cytosol to the outer membrane in Gram-negative bacteria. While a model of this lipopolysaccharide transport system exists, the mechanisms that are employed by these proteins to facilitate LPS transport are currently not understood. I am interested in exploring the conformational dynamics of these proteins by utilizing biophysics techniques such as continuous wave EPR spectroscopy and DEER (double electron–electron) to characterize mechanisms of LPS transport that will potentially reveal new antibiotic targets.
