About the ӰԺ Division of General Internal Medicine

Message from Our Division Chief

Barbara Slawski, MD, MS, SFHM
Welcome to the Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM)!

GIM is a highly engaged and exciting Division within the ӰԺ Department of Medicine. We believe in consistent and meaningful work towards a more effective, more efficient, and more equitable healthcare system, and have organized our team around this goal. Over the past five years, we expanded sections and leadership roles, developed new programs, and increased the number of our faculty, APPs, and staff.

The division consists of seven sections: four clinical sections and three non-clinical sections. The clinical sections of Primary Care, Hospital Medicine, Perioperative and Consultative Medicine, and the VA focus on responding to our constantly evolving landscape of healthcare. The three non-clinical sections allow for rapid growth and strong infrastructure to support the additional missions of ӰԺ: research (through the Research Section), education (through the Faculty Development, Wellness, & Education Section), and community engagement (through the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement Section).

GIM supports over 150 faculty, advanced practice providers (APPs), and staff and is ever expanding. The division is home to many of the key educational leaders in the Department of Medicine, and a large health services research group with over $25 million in federal research funding. Many faculty members serve in leadership roles with of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), and the American College of Physicians (ACP), and present frequently at regional and national meetings of these societies.

I invite you to peruse our website and learn more about us, and to review our annual State of the Division report, which further highlights the accomplishments of GIM throughout the past year, as well as our recent research publications. If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your interest in the Division of General Internal Medicine, and we look forward to connecting with you.
