Research Summary

The goal of Dr. Kindel’s laboratory is to develop an understanding for the improvement in metabolic and cardiovascular diseases after bariatric surgery. Using animal models of obesity and metabolic disease, the Kindel laboratory performs rodent bariatric surgery studying various mechanisms including the gut microbiome, bile acid signaling, blood-based secretory factors, and gut hormones. The Kindel laboratory also utilizes cell culture models of cardiac stress to understand the relationship between circulating blood factors and cardioprotection after bariatric surgery. Further, the Kindel laboratory utilizes clinical samples and patient outcomes whenever possible to confirm benchtop findings with the goal of ultimately developing novel therapies for metabolic disease to trial within patients. If interested in collaborating or learning more about the Kindel laboratory, please contact Dr. Tammy Kindel.
