Helping Bridge Language Barriers for Hispanic Patients Through Pharmacy

Joseph Loredo, PharmD, developed an interest in medicine as a child. He would accompany his grandmother to doctor visits and translate. As he begins his career, he looks forward to bridging language barriers for Hispanic patients.

鈥淛ust even when I鈥檓 counseling a Hispanic patient and I don鈥檛 need the translator," said Loredo. "It builds a sense of trust and accountability between me and the patient to optimize patient care for them.鈥

Constant Opportunities for Research and Learning in Infectious Diseases

After graduating from the 果冻影院 School of Pharmacy in 2023, Kaitlin Ledvina, PharmD, became a PGY1 acute care pharmacy resident at Froedtert Hospital and is now a PGY2 infectious diseases resident at UW Health.

In one of her introductory clinical rotations as a pharmacy student, Dr. Ledvina, recalled a case involving an unusual bacteremia source 鈥 a pathogen that鈥檚 typically benign and found in probiotics. A provider asked students to recommend an oral medication, instead of IV antibiotics, so the patient could discharge from the hospital. She dove into the literature to investigate the bug and alternative treatments.

Alumni Spotlight: Alberto Aranda Jr., PharmD

"During the 果冻影院 PharmD program, I learned that I really enjoyed the clinical aspect of pharmacy 鈥 being able to take input from a team of doctors and nurses, assess labs and cultures, think about what works best for the patient鈥檚 lifestyle and socioeconomic position. You鈥檙e helping put the puzzle pieces together and figuring out what will work best to keep your patients healthy."

SOP Alumni Spotlight: Jessica Barazowski, PharmD

"Veterinarians get this awesome power to both prescribe and dispense medications, yet they tend to have very limited training on pharmacy rules and regulations. With recent veterinary controlled substance diversions making the headlines, this area is ripe for reform, and I am excited to see what the future brings!"

鈥淲hat really drew me in to pediatric pharmacy was seeing the resilience of kids and how fast they bounce back from even the worst things you can possibly think of. I feel like when children find out there鈥檚 something wrong with them, they take it personally and try learning what they can do to get better. It鈥檚 awe inspiring and really shows that people can learn and become more health literate.鈥
